Watercolor Artist & Instructor

Coleen Allen

I started painting in 1978, and since then my work has constantly evolved. Art is a passion that has become my full time career. Not only do I get to paint for a living, I enjoy sharing with my students by instructing classes and workshops throughout the year.

Painting is like reading a really good book. I can't put the brush down, because I am so excited to see how it is going to end. When people look at my art I hope that they will want to study it and enjoy the story within.

I paint mostly in watercolor.  My paintings are large with a limited color palette of three or four colors, giving the image a softer balanced look, with use of varying edges. I paint the background first working forward, using layers of glazes. My favorite style to paint is still life, because of the easy access of materials. I also enjoy the hunt, of finding these treasures. My other passions are cooking and gardening, and a love of horses, as you will see in my paintings.
